Workplace Design
In the fast-paced world of logistics, a company's operational nerve center is paramount to its success. When Unitrans, a leader in transportation and logistics, envisioned their new office, they required a space that was not only a high-tech command hub but also a place that fostered collaboration, well-being, and brand identity.
This project, known as the COE (Centre of Excellence), was born from a uniquely specific brief from the client, demanding an equally unique fit-out. To bring this vision to life, they partnered with the experts at Inhouse Design Studio, who have delivered a masterclass in modern workplace design. The primary purpose of this cutting-edge space is to monitor Unitrans' extensive vehicle fleet across the country. The technology integrated throughout the facility is a testament to this, providing a constant stream of real-time data. However, the COE is not just a control room; it also serves as a sophisticated venue for executive meetings and presentations. The result is a stunning fusion of a sophisticated, technology-driven command center with warm, human-centric elements, creating an environment that is as inspiring as it is functional.
This project stands as a testament to Inhouse Design Studio's ability to translate a complex operational brief into a cohesive and powerful spatial experience.
The Hub: A Symphony of Data and Design
The heart of the new Unitrans office is undoubtedly its mission control-style command center. Inhouse Design Studio moved away from traditional office layouts to create a dynamic, tiered amphitheater setting. This circular, multi-level workstation provides staff with unparalleled sightlines to a 360-degree wall of real-time data screens, tracking the nationwide fleet. The circular geometry, a recurring motif throughout the design, is masterfully employed here. A large, round meeting table sits at the center, anchored by a dramatic, multi-layered circular ceiling feature that bathes the area in soft, diffused light. This design choice is not merely aesthetic; it symbolizes connectivity, unity, and the continuous flow of information and goods that is central to the Unitrans business.
The integration of technology is seamless and sophisticated. The vast array of monitors is not just a functional necessity but a core design element, creating an immersive and impressive backdrop. The use of a deep navy blue on the surrounding walls allows the data on the screens to take center stage, while warm wood tones on the custom-built tiered seating and central table provide a crucial sense of balance and warmth.
Spaces for Focus and Collaboration
Understanding that a modern workforce requires a variety of work settings, Inhouse Design Studio intelligently interspersed the high-energy command center with zones designed for quiet focus and intimate collaboration. A standout feature is a cozy, acoustically treated meeting booth, framed by striking vertical wood slats. Inside, warm pendant lighting and comfortable upholstered seating create a private enclave perfect for small team meetings or individual focused work, complete with an integrated screen for presentations.
These flexible zones demonstrate a deep understanding of agile work principles. By providing a spectrum of spaces, from the bustling command center to quiet pods, the design empowers employees to choose the environment that best suits their task at hand, boosting both productivity and job satisfaction.
Biophilia and Branding: A Natural Connection
Perhaps the most striking counterpoint to the office's high-tech core is the extensive use of biophilic design. A lush, vibrant green wall serves as a stunning backdrop for the crisp, white Unitrans logo in the reception area, immediately grounding the space with a connection to nature. This theme is woven throughout the office, with integrated planters in wooden shelving and visual access to the natural landscape through large windows. This is not just a decorative choice; it is a strategic one. The presence of natural elements is proven to reduce stress and enhance creativity. By juxtaposing the living walls and natural wood textures against the industrial feel of the exposed ceilings and polished concrete, Inhouse Design Studio has created a harmonious balance. This thoughtful integration ensures that despite the immense technological capacity of the space, it remains a fundamentally human and welcoming place to work. The firm’s expertise is evident in their ability to not only meet the technical demands of a logistics giant but to do so with a design that is sophisticated, sustainable, and deeply considerate of the people who use it every day.
