Design Tips
When a prestigious wine and olive estate decides to house a world-class Italian restaurant, the design must be nothing short of spectacular. This was the challenge presented to Inhouse Design Studio, the acclaimed Cape Town-based firm, for the creation of 95 at Morgenster. Led by the visionary Creative Director Aidan Hart and his team, this commercial project masterfully blends the rustic charm of the Italian countryside with the breathtaking beauty of the South African Winelands.Located just 35 minutes from Cape Town on the historic Morgenster Wine & Olive Estate, 95 at Morgenster is the result of a collaboration between estate owner Giulio Bertrand and renowned chef Giorgio Nava. Following the success of Nava’s other establishments designed by Inhouse, including the iconic 95 on Keerom and Carne, the studio was the natural choice to bring this new vision to life. The brief was to create a space with a “brighter, lighter character” than its urban counterparts, a design that would complement its idyllic setting beside a serene lake with uninterrupted mountain views.
A Natural Welcome: The Bar and Entrance
The immediate impression upon entering 95 at Morgenster is one of organic elegance. The bar area, a true centerpiece of the design, instantly captivates with a lush canopy of green vines suspended from the ceiling. This striking feature, which extends to the outer deck, suffuses the space with a natural, almost alfresco feel. It’s a brilliant nod to both the vineyard setting and the rustic charm of an Italian pergola. Underneath this living ceiling, the Inhouse team, led by Aidan Hart, composed a palette of warm, natural materials. A solid wood bar top and matching stools invite guests to linger, while the herringbone-patterned travertine floor adds a layer of timeless texture. The design is a study in sophisticated comfort, creating a welcoming atmosphere that is both refined and relaxed.
Sophisticated Dining, Inspired by Art
The main dining area continues the narrative of light, art, and nature. The dark, moody ambiance of a traditional trattoria is replaced with clean white walls, polished stone floors, and an abundance of natural light. A key element of the design is the distinctive timber slat ceiling that flows through the restaurant, adding warmth and linear texture that draws the eye through the elongated space. Inhouse’s selection of furniture is both stylish and practical. The iconic white Kartell Masters chairs by Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitllet provide a touch of modern artistry, their fluid, interlocking lines contrasting beautifully with the simple, light oak tabletops. For more intimate moments, deep blue velvet banquettes offer a luxurious pop of color and comfort.True to Inhouse’s holistic design approach, the space doubles as a gallery, showcasing a curated collection of works by celebrated South African artists like Norman Catherine and Diane Victor. This integration of fine art elevates the dining experience, creating a culturally rich environment that stimulates conversation and delight.
A Testament to Visionary Design
This commercial project is a testament to the expertise of Aidan Hart and the Inhouse Design Studio team. They have skillfully navigated the brief to deliver a restaurant interior that is both contextually sensitive and uniquely beautiful. The design for 95 at Morgenster is a harmonious dialogue between Italian culinary tradition and the natural splendor of the Cape Winelands. By blending organic elements with modern design classics and a deep appreciation for art, Inhouse has created more than just a restaurant; they have crafted an unforgettable destination. It stands as a shining example of premier commercial interior design in Cape Town, a space where every detail contributes to a story of elegance, warmth, and exceptional taste.
